Alex Bellman, 1896-1962

Alex Bellman 1918

Alex (Alec) Bellman was the fourth son and fifth child of David Girsh (Hersh) Bellman and his wife Raytzel Markson. His name on his naturalization documents is spelled Elik, stating that he arrived at Galveston on the ship Breslau on July 25, 1912. If this is really Alex, he used the name Leib instead of Alex or Elik.

By the 1920 census Alec is shown living with his extended family: Eli Krupp and Eli's wife Rachel Bellman Krupp and their children, Lamar and Celia Bellman, and brother Charles Bellman. He's listed as a salesman in a retail store.

Alex served in the U.S. Army during WWI as a private in the Machine Gun Company, 85th Infantry division but was not deployed to Europe during the hostilities. He was an active member of the Safford community as one of the initiators of the American Legion and as a Mason.

He was a gentle, kind and sweet man who loved children. He always had pieces of hard candy in his pocket to share and was surrounded by the delighted children of the family at every get-together.

Alec married Sarah Gordon in 1922. Their children were David and Melvina. Alex died in 1962.
